Voicelab 1 - beginning is for everyone

6 weekly sessions feature key vocal concepts that are developed through uniquely encompassing exercises, techniques and improvisation.  This is definitely not your ordinary voice lesson as we reach wide to integrate desire with impulse and imagination.  Open to anyone interested in breathing, speaking, singing and beyond... realize your vocal potential.

[ Voicelab 2 - begins April 2005

The second level workshops are for those that have been previous Voicelab participants or who are already familiar with their voice and have some sort of evolved connection with it. We continue to develop primary modes of body/mind awareness and exploration while engaging more rigorous extended vocal technique, with structured improvisation coming to the foreground of our work. There will be a special focus on cultivating vocal tone and ear training for singing and improvising. Some music and voice theory will accompany the exploratory work and we'll take a look at strategies for composing or writing for voice. ]

This series is open to anyone interested in a full bodied exploration of their creative potential through voice.

set 1: breathing voice focuses on the greatest renewable resource we have - the breath. through exercises that release and strengthen we clear a path for deeper, more complete breathing for any kind of voice production or simply to become more sensitive to the breath of life itself...Thursdays, Oct. 7 & 14, 7-8:30 pm

set 2: writing through the voice addresses the relationship of writing and voice. explore inner voices with words and sounds and the other way around. cultivate an open exchange between language and the feeling sound of your voiced body... Thursdays, October 21 & 28, 7-8:30 pm

set 3: the extended voice is an opportunity for you to really expand not only your vocal range and skills, but the very perception you hold about what the voice is and does. take risks and have big fun with the artful play of voice out of bounds... Thursdays, November 4 & 18, 7-8:30 pm (note that Nov. 11 is skipped)

hey now, hey now - this is a call for your participation!!! A chorus happening: VOX RISK HOLLER

This chorus represents an experiment in community, in composed freedom and channeled energy and is open to anyone who has the desire and ability to commit. The VRH enterprise is conceived of as an opportunity for group singing, sounding and otherwise vocally emitting material that is composed and/or structured by Lynn, although we might perform a piece for multiple voices by another contemporary composer - you will definitely be invited to improvise within the structure. (there is no special vocal training required for this kind of singing!,) Lynn will also guide the process and conduct the actual performance. Not much four part harmony here, but plenty of complex sounds and tones to create aural textures and dynamic vocal events. There is likely to be some text, some music and simple movement – this is definitely an entreaty to the intrepid vocal explorer, so if you enjoy experiments, then jump on in!

Anyone that ever thought "I can't sing" simply because they didn't sound like Whitney Houston, Britney Spears or Pavorotti (or any other Western classical or pop icon) should take this class to understand the immense potential of the human voice and the unique approaches to creating your vocal sound. (We'll learn songs and tuning systems!). Also any 'world music' lover needs this perspective to find 'hidden' relationships between a culture, it's environmental and social fabric that all help to produce the life force knownas music.

LOOP 2004

This is the creaive projects lab, culminating in a fully produced evening of new works for voice by the LOOP group that might not otherwise get made. Given cultural categories of acceptability and social expectations for the voice, LOOP plays an important role in insuring that exploratory work for voice gets developed and supported in a workshop environment and then brought to performance. In years past, LOOP has been seen at CBGB's 313 Gallery in Soho and at Dixon Place, a renowned incubator space for emerging artists and new material by seasoned ones. For LOOP 2002, we've extended and crafted the lab time to provide more of an opportunity to develop ideas and working processes before getting into the production phase of making the performance. The focus of our work is on the process of not only making performance for voice, but thinking it; that is, the questions of how and what and what if and why and why not. The forum is one that opens our respective processes to group review so that we can ponder and make together, and in that learn more about our own intentions and methods and the social space within which performance operates. So! 4 more sessions have been added to lay the foundation and to give rise to a more critically aware process of invention.

The public performance will occur sometime in the 3rd week of May. This is an incredible opportunity to get your work out there in a fully produced evening and LOOP is highly selective with limited enrollment, so call now to set up your appointment!
